Danube River Cruises

View Danube River Cruises

When looking to see the best of Europe on a river cruise holiday, our Danube river cruises are the perfect way to explore one of the continent's most iconic rivers, the beauty of which was famously honoured by the Austrian composer Strauss when he wrote his celebrated waltz, The Blue Danube, in 1866.

In addition to visiting Austria on an Austria river cruise, a cruise up the Danube River also flows through many iconic river cruise destinations such as Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, Germany, Croatia, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Ukraine, starting its 1,770-mile journey in Germany’s Black Forest, near the town of Donaueschingen, where the Brigach and Breg rivers converge. From there, it flows east through Central and Eastern Europe, taking in several memorable capitals, before emptying into the Black Sea after passing through the Danube Delta.

River Danube Cruise Destinations

A River Danube cruise heads through many iconic European river cruise destinations. Cruising from some of Eastern Europe's finest locations to the heart of Germany.

Vienna

A mainstay of Danube cruises, a Vienna river cruise showcases all that the city is famous for, from its baroque architecture to a tour of its historic centre, which is a must on a river cruise excursion. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to such memorable buildings as the celebrated Opera House, Hofburg Palace, the Town Hall and the truly spectacular St Stephan’s Cathedral. A little outside the city is Schönbrunn Palace, a popular attraction where you can explore 40 fascinating rooms once inhabited by the legendary Habsburgs, as well as some of the most beautiful and expertly landscaped gardens in Europe.

Budapest

The Danube is responsible for creating the ‘Buda’ and ‘Pest’ sides of Hungary’s memorable capital, as it passes directly through the city. A Budapest river cruise allows you to explore the cosmopolitan ‘Pest side’, where you'll uncover many of the city’s most ornate and historic buildings, such as the Parliament Building and the Hungarian State Opera House. It’s also where you’ll find Chain Bridge, which is the first bridge ever built over the Hungarian section of the Danube.

The focus on any excursion to the Buda side of the city is the mediaeval Castle Hill area, home to the charming 19th-century folly Fishermen’s Bastion and the historic Matthias Church, where the country’s kings were crowned.

Other must see Danube destinations

The Danube passes through many other countries and cities on its journey, but one key city close to its point of origin is Bavaria’s capital, Munich, where you’ll be able to explore the city’s key highlights, such as the Olympic Stadium and Nymphenburg Palace.

Discover Serbia’s beautiful capital, Belgrade; Germany’s Passau – where the Inn and Ilz Rivers join the Danube; scenic Melk, home to a charming Benedictine abbey; and Regensburg, one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe.

Before it concludes its epic journey, the Danube passes through the Danube Delta, the second-largest and best-preserved of Europe’s deltas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area is the continent’s best-preserved delta and is home to 2,200 square miles of rivers, canals, marshes, and the highest concentration of bird colonies in all of Europe. The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve boasts the third-largest biodiversity in the world, surpassed only by Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Islands Archipelago off the coast of Ecuador.

Sailing the Danube On Board Scenic Opal

Sailing the Danube On Board Scenic Opal

Sailing the Danube On Board Scenic Opal   I was fortunate enough to enjoy an incredible stay aboard Scenic Opal, one of Scenic's ultra-luxury Space-Ships in Europe. From the moment I stepped onboard, the ship felt spacious, modern and elegantly designed. I was warmly welcomed at reception and guided to my Royal Balcony Suite on the Diamond Deck.   Sail with Scenic River Tours     The suite was impressively spacious, featuring a plush queen-sized bed, separate lounge and an oversized bathroom with separate shower and bathtub, complete with ESPA amenities. My favourite part of the suite was the balcony - especially at dusk, when the sky turned vibrant shades of pink, and the gentle sound of the water created a perfect sense of tranquillity as we sailed.   Staying in a Royal Balcony Suite comes with a host of luxurious perks, including a welcome bottle of champagne, daily replenished mini-bar, butler service and bathrobe with slippers. A special surprise awaited me - a gold envelope revealing an exclusive invitation to a six-course tasting menu at Table La Rive, reserved only for guests of Royal and Junior Suites.     Before dinner, I went up to the sundeck to soak up some spring sunshine by the pool. As we set sail, I sipped on a cocktail admiring the neo-gothic Hungarian Parliament Building, an impressive sight over the Danube River.      It was then time to head down to the Crystal Dining room to experience Table La Rive. This exquisite fine dining event, limited to just 10 guests, showcased an expertly crafted tasting menu paired with sommelier selected wines. A truly memorable and special touch of the trip.   The next morning, we arrived in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. One of the things I love most about river cruising is the convenience of docking right in the heart of the destination. This meant we could step straight off the ship into a walking tour excursion which was both informative and insightful.     After the tour, I returned to the ship for a relaxed lunch at the Riverview Terrace. Later, I couldn't resist the therapeutic Salt Therapy Lounge. Mimicking the environment of a salt cave, this experience is known for improving respiration and boosting the immune system, leaving me feeling refreshed.   I had a fabulous time onboard Scenic Opal sailing the Danube, a trip I highly recommend!   Deals for Scenic River Tours ships Scenic Opal

Spotlight On: The Rhine-Main-Danube Canal

Spotlight On: The Rhine-Main-Danube Canal

Spotlight On: The Rhine-Main-Danube Canal The Rhine-Main-Danube canal is a 106-mile-long waterway connecting three major rivers of Europe and allowing free flow of traffic between the North Sea and the Black Sea. Beginning in the German town of Bamberg on the Main river, the canal travels to Kelheim in Bavaria, where it meets the Danube river.   Rhine River Cruise Deals Danube River Cruise Deals   The History of the Waterway   The waterway was initially conceived by Charlemagne, Charles I, in 793, who wished to open a new route for his battle fleet. Following heavy rainfall, the original channel collapsed, and the project was abandoned. Ludwig I of Bavaria reimagined the waterway in 1837 when he worked on a canal which followed much the same route as the canal we see today. This was utilised until World War II but underwent extensive damage and was abandoned once more.   In 1921, the German government and state of Bavaria formed a company to build a much larger Rhine-Main-Danube canal, enlarging the locks and installing several hydroelectric power stations. These constructions took place between 1960 and 1992, with a total of 16 locks dotted along the river banks to deal with the extreme height differences between the rivers.   Now, when sailing along the waterway, you will experience a transition of nearly 1,400 feet across 100 miles. Reach the banks of some of Germany and Hungary’s best-loved towns and cities, from Nuremberg and Bamberg to Vienna in Austria and Budapest.   Taking the Scenic Route   Some of the best ports on Rhine, Main and Danube river cruises can be visited along this picturesque canal.   Beginning in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bamberg’s Altstadt, this German town is the perfect place to begin your crossing of the Rhine-Main-Danube canal. The beer is deliciously smoky and the medieval streets of Bamberg are narrow, oozing charisma and charm and ranking as one of Germany’s most attractive towns.   Travel onward to Fürth, where you can admire the city centre architecture or explore the municipal museum, which boasts a history stretching back over 1,000 years. Head through the Valley of Regnitz and you will reach the town of Roth as you pass by the Frankish Alb mountains, also known as the Franconian Jura or Fränkische Alb.   Before the canal joins the Danube, explore the small Bavarian town of Dietfurt, a characteristic town that comes alive with the celebrations of carnival during Lent.   Uses in the Modern Age   It is believed that the canal has impacted the ecosystems throughout the River Rhine and Danube, with the waterway transporting species of fish, clams, shrimp and crabs between countries. In more recent years, the highest level of goods transported was in food and feed, reaching 1.6 million tons, followed by goods in agriculture and forestry, then ores and metal scrap.   Freight volume by country in 2010 was largely dominated by Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, who together contributed 87 per cent of all goods transported between them.   The network of waterways offers an enchanting experience for cruisers as they journey between several countries at once, enjoying the fairytale scenery of Germany and Bavaria before sailing through the captivating culture and cuisines of Hungary and Austria.   Have you travelled along this historic canal? Sailing the Danube: My AmaWaterways Experience

Sailing the Danube: My AmaWaterways Experience

Sailing the Danube: My AmaWaterways Experience I've recently returned from a fantastic four days aboard AmaWaterways' spectacular ship, AmaSonata, and wanted to give you an insight into all the fleet has to offer, as well as share some of my highlights from my trip along the Danube.   View AmaWaterways River Cruise Deals   Sailing with AmaWaterways     AmaWaterways transports you to the heart of your destination, allowing you to visit historic cities, immerse yourself in art and culture, admire stunning landscapes and enjoy fine cuisine and wine on board a selection of stunning luxury ships. With a wide variety of included small-group excursions to choose from, AmaWaterways will turn your next holiday into a cherished collection of unique memories.   On Board AmaSonata     Stepping aboard our home for the next four nights, I was immediately impressed by its design. All of AmaWaterways' ships are quite small compared to an ocean cruise, which makes it easy to find your way around. As soon as we entered, we were met by the welcome desk and greeted by their warm and friendly team, who carried our bags to our staterooms.   I stayed in an Oceanview room, which provided plenty of storage space and my favourite feature, the walk-in rain shower. The accommodation on board has a really cosy feel, which is echoed throughout the public areas including the lounge and bar, where I enjoyed sitting down with a hot drink in the morning or a cocktail in the evening!   The dining experiences were phenomenal! The staff couldn't have done more for us and were always quick to take our orders, continually checking in and making sure our glasses were always filled. At all meal times, we were spoilt for choice; breakfast is served buffet-style from fruit, cereals and granola to full-English options, as well as a menu with meals, such as eggs benedict, made to order. At dinner, you always have a wide variety of options across a six- or seven-course menu but if you fancied a classic, then staples such as burgers, pizzas and steaks are always available! I had a steak one evening after seeing several people order it the night before and I was not disappointed! It was one of the best steaks I’ve had in many years.     One evening we decided to eat with some friends who we’d been sharing a drink with at ‘Sip & Sail’ in the lounge upstairs before dinner. That’s what's great about this ship, you can make friends and meet new people in the lounge, and as it’s a smaller ship, you’ll likely be dining in the same venue as them later! We all went down and requested a larger table, as they’re always accommodating to guests sitting and sharing a dining experience together.     Discovering the Danube   AmaWaterways are so organised and efficient when it comes to arranging their tours, from the transportation and variety of options to the quality of the tour operators they used – every tour we went on was not too crowded, so we could engage with the tour guide, and they were all incredibly knowledgeable on the area, which really helped to bring each port to life.     Bratislava was a lovely historical city. We did a castle hike tour which was beautiful! The tour guide was so knowledgeable, and the panoramic views from the top of the castle were just breathtaking – so worth the small walk up to the top. The castle grounds are also beautiful, and we all loved wandering around and enjoying learning about the history of Slovakia and Bratislava. The shopping is great there too – I went to a mall about a five-minute walk from where we docked and there were so many shops to take a look around.   Budapest was without a doubt my favourite port of them all! It was my second time there and I fell in love with it all over again. The weather was stunning, the atmosphere in the city is great, and the castle quarter tour was just spectacular. The architecture is breathtaking, and there are so many gorgeous places to visit, from the castle grounds and castle quarter to St Stephen’s Basilica and of course, the iconic parliament building.     If I had one tip for cruising the Danube with AmaWaterways, it would be to make sure you get ready for dinner a little earlier and go upstairs before Sip and Sail to admire the sunset over the parliament building as you sail past. It was so beautiful and the most memorable moment from my time on board!   Deals for AmaWaterways

My 3-Night River Cruise – 3 City Breaks In One!

My 3-Night River Cruise – 3 City Breaks In One!

My 3-Night River Cruise – 3 City Breaks In One! A keen ocean cruiser, I had been hoping to try a river cruise for some time and this month I was fortunate to be invited on board Emerald River Cruises, Emerald Sky for a 3-night cruise on the Danube, boarding in Budapest and sailing on to Bratislava and then Vienna.   Discover Emerald River Cruises See Europe River Cruises   I am now a true river cruise convert and cannot wait for my next trip!   Although a very different experience from ocean cruises on board larger ships, there are some similarities, in particular the level of service and quality of the food on board.   But outside of this, river cruising is a unique experience and something I would urge anyone to try! This is a cruise holiday built around the itineraries and destinations. Being able to visit 3 beautiful capital cities in 3 days was a real treat and a river cruise can take you straight into the heart of the city.   From the moment we boarded the ship I knew we were going to experience something special.  Our first night on board was an evening cruise through Budapest. From the grandeur of the Hungarian Parliament building to the beauty of Buda Castle, the views from the terrace of our ship were stunning as we sailed under The Chain Bridge. The buildings on the banks of the Danube are lit up at night and I can’t think of a better way to enjoy this.   Budapest is a beautiful city and after a day of exploring, I definitely can see why many people decide to extend their holiday with a pre-cruise stay.   Bratislava is one of the smallest capitals in Europe, but it makes up for its size with plenty of character. Picturesque squares and pavement cafés tempted us to stop for morning coffee and cake, and with the ship not sailing until later in the evening, a chance to try the Bratislava nightlife.   Our 3-day cruise ended in Vienna, with a visit to the Kunsthistorisches Museum – a beauty in its own right even before you take your time to enjoy the fine art and paintings by the masters!   We then had to say goodbye to Emerald Sky and head home, but I would urge anyone to give River Cruising a try. It’s one of the most relaxing and luxurious ways to visit some of Europe’s finest cities!   In all three cities, there were excursions for all levels of fitness, hikes and bike tours for those wanting an active experience and city guides, coach and walking tours for all abilities. What I learnt from this trip is that a river cruise can offer something for all ages. For those that want to relax and enjoy the scenery from the comfort of the ship to those that want to get out and explore, the itinerary and excursion programme caters for all.   The only decision I now have is which river to choose for my next trip, the Rhine, Douro or the Garonne River to enjoy wine tasting in Bordeaux.   Deals for Emerald Cruises
